September 2010 ABSTRACT
Chemistry and Technology in Tires
Dr. Nina Veas, Michelin Corporation
Tires are round, black, come in sets of four, and need to be inflated to perform. Is there more to it than that? A closer examination of the materials and chemical processes used in the manufacture of a tire reveals that they are highly sophisticated composites. The performance of a vehicle (acceleration, cornering, breaking) depends directly on the interaction of the tire and the road surface. The properties of the tire also influence vehicle milage, tread wear, and susceptibility to weather. In this talk, we will discuss some of the rubber compounds and additives used in tires, and how their properties effect tire performance and vehicle safety. Specifically, we will show how the performance of a tire can be tailored by selecting a particular polymer combination. We will discover that the "simple" tire is actually a precision device designed for particular vehicles, environmental conditions, and even driving styles.
