THE 2003 SCHWEIZERHALL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The Schweizerhall Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that Ms. Erin Rebecca Ferguson, a rising senior majoring in chemistry at Clemson University, has been awarded the Schweizerhall Scholarship in the Chemical Sciences for the 2003-04 academic year. Ms. Ferguson is the fifth recipient of the $1,500 scholar-ship that is awarded in recognition of outstanding achievement to a rising junior or senior student who is majoring in chemistry or chemical engineering at one of the colleges or universities in the Western Carolinas Section of the American Chemical Society.

Erin began her association with Clemson as a high school student from Goose Creek, SC in the summer of 1999. As a research intern in Professor Hwu?s laboratory, she researched the electrochemical crystallization of K Cu7-x S4, using x-ray powder diffraction to study properties of this substance. After her freshman year at Clemson, Erin spent the summer of 2001 working in Professor Pennington?s research laboratory. This work will lead to at least three publi-cations and has provided the basis for a Ph.D.-level project in Dr. Pennington?s laboratory. She gave a poster presentation on this research at the Southeast Regional Meeting of ACS in Savannah, September 23-26, 2001. During the summer of 2002, Erin continued to conduct research as an exchange student at Nantes, France, where she explored the use of coated metal nanoparticles as a novel anode material of lithium ion batteries.

Erin has been equally successful in the classroom, earning a perfect 4.0 grade point ratio at Clemson. She has received numerous honors and awards, including the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship in 2002. She was one of only five recipients of this prestigious national scholarship awarded to students in South Carolina in 2002.

In addition to her academic success, Ms. Ferguson has broad interests in the arts, and she participates in a variety of extracurricular activities. For example, she has played the flute for almost eleven years, is a member of Clemson?s Chidokwan Karate Club, and is an active participant in the service activities of her church. Following her graduation from Clemson in May of 2004, Erin plans to earn a Ph.D. degree in chemistry and pursue a career in research.

The selection committee received applications from six outstanding students representing Clemson University, Furman University, Warren Wilson College, Western Carolina University, and Wofford College. All of the applicants will be invited to attend the Awards Banquet at Furman University on April 17 as guests of the Section. During this event they will be introduced and recognized for their achievements. The selection committee regrets that we have only one scholarship to award to these deserving students.

The previous Schweizerhall Scholarships were awarded to Kari-Kristin A. Cox of Furman University (1999), Peter Michael Huskey of UNC-Asheville (2000), Russell Patrick Watson of Clemson University (2001), and Nathan Allen Carrington of Erskine College (2002).
