The Webmaster's Message

For the past twelve years it has been my honor and priviledge to be the webmaster for our section. It is probably my sole contribution to the section and that is my point: without active members reporting the activities of the section to myself and my (mostly e-mail) friend and longtime editor of The Periodic News, Dexter Squibb, there would be no web site or Periodic News because there would be nothing to report.

So please get active in the Section, share your time and talent and your passion for chemistry. Finally, drop Dexter and/or myself a "press release" for publication in the Section's official communications which are this site and The Periodic News.

electronically yours,
your webmaster

Dwayne Grassie

On the Lighter Side :)

A t a convention of biological scientists, one researcher remarks to another, "Did you know that in our lab we have switched from mice to lawyers for our experiments?"

"Really?" the other replied, "Why did you switch?"

"Well, for five reasons. First, we found that lawyers are far more plentiful. Second, the lab assistants don't get so attached to them. Third, lawyers multiply faster in numbers, Fourth, animal rights groups will not object to their torture. And fifth, there are some things even a rat won't do.

There is a drawback however; sometimes it's very hard to extrapolate the test results to human beings!"

Design Recommendations
Use the templates and graphics found here.
Add ALT tags to your graphic or picture, to provide a description for your graphic.
Adobe PDF documents are best used for static documents such as forms and publications
QuickTime movies really consume server space. We should use such gimmicks judiciously.
Simple, text based pages load faster than any other kind. Keep graphics to a minimum.
Keep the fonts used to a minimum. Use standard fonts.
Content should be refreshed periodically.  Pages more than 6 months old are obsolete.
If exotic fonts must be used, create a graphic so the font will display on all platforms.
Pictures and graphics should be created at the largest size and highest resolution possible.
Pictures and graphics should then be sized and reduced to 72x72 or 75x75 to make it web-ready.
Pictures should also be provided at full size and max resolution through the use of a hypertext link to the file.
Don't forget your ALT tag!
